The new film Nuremberg, poses the question, we still cannot or will not answer.

There is a moment in the film Nuremberg when Russell Crowe’s Herman Göring, condemned to death for crimes against humanity, turns to the military psychiatrist profiling him and asks, will you remember us as human?

It is a chilling moment in a chilling film, one that in my opinion is Crowe’s greatest acting achievement. Are the Nazis human?

It is so convenient to explain them away as monsters, but monsters belong in fairytales, they were human indeed, so, so human. I have written in a previous post here that evil is rare, evil is beyond the human, the Devil is no mere mortal.

I am prepared to entertain the idea that Hitler was the Devil, certainly possessed by Satan. But the Devil does his work because in us all is a seed of wickedness.
